Modern Salt and Pepper House in D.C. Sprinkled with Color
KUBE Architecture recently completed the design of Salt and Pepper House, a lively family residence in Washington, D.C.. In the planning stage, the architects stumbled across some interesting details, which led to the original development of their project.
“The owners of this home love to cook, and their first requirement was a cook’s kitchen as the centerpiece of the house,” the architects said. “In addition, they have a strong color preference for black and white. Thus the concept of ‘salt and pepper’ was developed as an inspiration for the design palette. The owners are also art collectors, so the display of art in the house was another critical component.”
White walls with black framing elements seemed like the perfect choice to balance the design needs of the inhabitants. Pops of color were sprinkled throughout the home to spice up the visual mix.
The layout of the rowhouse was designed for both daily living and entertainment. In order to host gatherings throughout the year, the rear second floor was removed to allow for a double-height wall of windows and sliding doors. This also allows the two-story living space to connect with the new rear garden. [Photos and information courtesy of KUBE Architecture]
